My K-Pop Story (Warning, LONG)

My friends have always wondered what got me into liking K-Pop (Korean Pop, for those of you who don't know such a thing!) and they still don't understand why I love K-Pop. K-pop is fun, addictive, interesting, creative and relaxing in my opinion. K-Pop has definitely changed my life in ways that I cannot explain. But lets go ahead and get on with the story :)

In August of 2010, I was sitting at home watching some Bubzbeautymakeup tutorials on YouTube. As I was watching videos, this one video kept appearing in the 'Related Videos' bar. That video was titled "Taeyeon Look (Run Devil Run MV)". Each time I saw the video, I was like...who is this Taeyeon chick? So I watched the video. As Bubz was doin' her makeup thing, I was listening to the instrumental of the song "Run Devil Run" (linked music vid!) and I was in LOVE with it! So I looked up the music video and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought Taeyeon was a Korean soloist, and I thought the other 8 members of Girls' Generation were her background singers. =___=" fail. But after doing countless hours of research on this girl group, I found my new music interest, and stopped listening to American music for about 2 months. I was trying to understand how Koreans now how the characters sounded, so I started teaching myself Korean through the videos on YouTube that were romanized. It was hard work, but it's worth it :) Along with studying Korean, I was teaching myself the dance to Run Devil Run and learned it quickly. I quickly discovered one of their older songs, Gee. I loved their whole "cute/aegyo" look, because it was much different than their tough, kick-ass look in Run Devil Run. From that day forward, I became a Sone and fell in love with the K-Pop industry.

As the months went by, I still studied my Korean and learned more about the members of SNSD, so I could become the proper Sone. While watching other videos on YouTube, I kept seeing this boy band named Super Junior in the related videos. The two groups were always related in some way and I wanted to see what the big deal was about this boy group named Super Junior. The very first video I watched was "No Other". I liked the sweet boyfriend look all 10 members had, and I looked more into their music, just like how I did with SNSD. I thought that EunHyuk was the leader and was shocked when I found out that it was LeeTeuk who was the actual leader! Another fail on my part -____-"The second song I discovered by Super Junior was "It's You". Now this is my fave Super Junior song EVER!! With this song, I discovered my bias, KyuHyun, who has the voice of a choir of angels and the cutest face ever.

All 10 members have their own personality that I love about them. It took me forever to understand that there was actually 15 members, and not 10. The group was made in 2005 with the 5 members. I got so confused learning their names and it took me 2 days to learn them all. It took me about half an hour to learn the 9 names of SNSD! And it also didn't help that Super Junior dyed their hair like they change their clothes every single music video!! I got so aggrivated :) By now, my K-Pop love had become an addiction. Every morning I had to listen to Super Junior and every night I had to work on my dances to SNSD's songs. I loved listening to the music and I loved learning another language and learning about a new culture :) I got more pen pals who gave me a Korean name, Lee JuHyun. I chose Lee for my surname because one of my fave group member's name is Lee Joon, who is part of the 5 member boy group named MBLAQ.

I was watching more music videos of Super Junior and once again, the related videos column on YouTube helped me discover yet ANOTHER group. SHINee. I was mad because everyone thought that SHINee was better than my Super Junior. So of course, I had to check out the competition. My first SHINee song was "Replay" and yet again, I was hooked. my first impression though, was, "psh! Please! They aren't better than SuJu!" But then I compared the groups, and I realized that my heart fluttered the same pace each time I saw their gorgeous faces, all of them! (Suju and SHINee combined) At the time, my favorite member was Onew because he just looked so darn cute!! :3 But slowly after time, my favorite member ended up being MinHo, and TaeMin being my second fave. Now, this group was just as good as Super Junior, but I couldn't pick SHINee over SuJu. No way, Jose! I admitted to myself that this group is very talented and handsome, just like SuJu. But this group was different than Super Junior, in a good way. With it only being 5 members, it was easier for me to learn all the members names and roles of the group. I learned that Onew was the leader, even though I thought JongHyun was the leader (what is up with me and guessing the wrong leaders?! 3 times in a row!!) =______="

I learned that all 3 groups are actually close to each other, which was good for me but I didn't know why. As all three of the groups gave their Japanese debut, I was psyched. I began to sing a long to the Japanese versions of Run Devil Run, Genie, Gee, and Bonamana. I just learned the Japanese version for Replay and Hello too :) I added Japanese to my list of languages to self teach, but I knew it wasn't going to be easy! But right before the groups had their Japanese debut, I discovered a sub-unit of Super Junior: Super Junior-M. This sub unit only has 8 members, since Hankyung left :'( and I loved the music I was hearing. I found out about them just in time for their debut of "Perfection" in February. I listened to the song exactly 100 times on the first day it came out. And as of right now, I have listened to it a total of 263 times.^^ I'm a proud Sone, E.L.F., and Shawol :) I hope you enjoyed this long story about how I discovered K-Pop :) and to think, it all started on a makeup tutorial on YouTube! <3 Haha, thanks Bubz!!!
